MMB w/c 21st September

Updated: Sep 21, 2020

Hello

If you want to dive straight into what's on offer this week then scroll straight to the bottom of this page.

How are you all? I hope you've managed to enjoy some of the beautiful weather we've had over the last few days. We managed to sneak in a last minute bbq at my parents' yesterday, in fear that it might be the last chance before we all get asked to stop mixing with other households again. This was the view from the patio where we were sitting, isn't it beautiful? Who needs to go on holiday when you can go and basque here.

It was heavenly and for a few hours we felt far away from the realities of Covid. I do wonder whether I will ever become green-fingered enough to be able to produce a garden like this? Firstly something bigger than the size of a postage stamp would be nice but even with that I just don't think I have that skill to, well, keep plants alive. Bread, yes. Plants, no. Even plants that are supposedly indestructible seem to die a painful death when left in my hands. So, until I am enlightened with the gift of gardening, cacti and bread will have to suffice (oh and I've managed to keep two children alive for a fair few years now so that's something I guess).

We were so pleased to get such positive feedback on our first collaboration with Audley End's Kitchen Garden last week to make our Potato & Rosemary Loaf. As you know we really enjoy working with local producers, and even more so those that share our ambition to do more together to help support each other whilst getting something delicious as a result at the end. My hope is that in the next few weeks we will start stocking a small quantity of the Kitchen Garden's produce at MMB. It will change every week depending on what is in season, what they can spare us and what may compliment the bread that is on offer that week. But whatever it may be, how brilliant that those of you local to MMB and Audley End House will be able to buy and enjoy produce grown organically just a small hop, skip and a jump down the road by a team of incredibly dedicated gardeners and volunteers. Watch this space. I'll let you know as soon as we are up and running.

I wanted to thank all of those that came and supported MMB last week. It was the first week since March 2020 where our sales were back to pre-lockdown levels. Thanks to schools re-opening and my parents (with the lovely garden) being able to help out with childcare again, I have been able to be back in the shop more to support Jeff. Sally has been able to make more cookies and buns (how good were the Vanilla Buns by the way? More of them to come, I assure you) and we've been able to get more deli items back on the shelves to give you a bigger range of deliciousness to choose from. I fear, as we all do, that this level of custom will soon die down again in order to keep us all safe, but for now I wanted to say a big THANK YOU. It means an awful lot and last week was the first sign we've had for a while that, whenever Covid decides to eventually do one, MMB may actually be ok. And that's thanks to our wonderful supporters who put up with our ever-changing opening times, occasional pancakes when the weather isn't on our side and Jeff's terrible taste in music. It means a lot.

Looking ahead to this week, we think it's about time the Chocolate Sourdough returns. It's been a while. And as one of your five a day we're also going to stud it with juicy cranberries, because who doesn't like some little ruby jewels hidden in amongst their chocolate sourdough squidginess?

We will have this on offer for Thursday pre-orders as well as on Saturday as our special.

I have placed orders for a top up of dairy supplies so we should have The Estate Dairy Milk and Iced Lattes, Fen Farm Dairy Bungay Butter and Skyr and, for the first time, Cacklebean Eggs. As one happy customer said "Cacklebean are to eggs as Rolls Royce is to cars. You simply don't get better." The eggs are laid by THE most spoilt of free range chickens on a Cotswolds farm, fed on the best maize and corn mash, with plenty of space to roam, roost and scratch in small flocks. And the result is a consistently perfect egg with a rich, golden yolk. Once you've had a Cacklebean Egg it's hard to find anything else as good. You can read more about the eggs, the chicken and the family that run the farm here.
